Health hints 2003

February 2003 - Be realistic when setting goals or resolutions for yourself, try to increase your daily exercise by ten minutes- even if you don’t do any at the moment – that way you will stick to it!

Getting FitterMarch 2003 - After the dull days of winter, now is the time of year to start to increase your aerobic work. Get off the bus or tube one stop earlier, leave the car further away from your office, take the stairs at work, add a ten minute lunch time walk, add extra minutes to your aerobic time at the gym.

April 2003 - Drink 8 large glasses a day. For every 20 minutes of aerobic activity you do add an extra ½ litre.

May 2003 - Try a new exercise machine at the gym, make yourself try a new activity or start exercising in the open air – any of these will inspire you and keep your exercising interesting and inspiring. We can all get stuck in a rut.

June 2003 - Use sun block on your face, arms and legs when exercising outside - even on cloudy days - to protect your skin.

July 2003 - Measure and record your food and drink intake accurately for just two days and check calories, fats, proteins and sugars – you will be surprised!! Changes may well be needed.

August 2003 -When you are on holiday plan how you can realistically include some exercise when you return. Start your first day back and stick to it!!

September 2003 - Walk at least 6 flights of stairs a day. When you get better the run up 8 flights of stairs a day.

October 2003 - Never neglect stretching. An effective daily stretch is to stand on a step with the balls of your feet on it and stretch your heels towards the floor. A more demending stretch is to bend one leg and push the other heel towards the floor. Hold for 20 secs and then repeat.

November 2003 - Keeping warm is important when exercising in colder weather but you don’t want to be sweltering either! Dress in layers of clothes you can shed and think what you will need to be wearing 15 minutes into your run. Remember no sportsperson ever performed better because they were cold!!!

December 2003 -Over Christmas plan your eating so you have days when you have treats and days when you don’t. This will help reduce any weight gain you make. After all it is easier to gain weight than to lose it.
